A MASTERCLASS FOR LIVE AUDIOVISUAL ART

Cimatics, Brussels International Platform for Live A/V, presents a Masterclass Live Audiovisual Art, within the framework of the studio-program Experimental Media-art provided by the VAF (the Flemish Audiovisual Fund).
Because the biggest merit of live A/V is its cross-border and cross-disciplinary character the masterclass will challenge its participants to do just that: collaborate.

THIS BLOG WILL BE PRINTED AND PUBLISHED AS A BOOK

The goal of this blog is to generate an open-source effect: opening up the discussions from within the masterclass to the rest of the world. Let this be a call for everyone to participate and join or start a debate.

Eventually, this blog will be printed as a book. An additional DVD with the open-source versions (Creative Commons license) of the participants masterclass-projects will be available afterwards. So if you post something to this blog, you are co-authoring the book.

hello from olga

Hi all,

Sorry for leaving earlier at the first week without say goodbye. I had been suffering from severe neck-aches all week, and on thursdays I just had enough..
I have enjoyed first edition very much. Especially proccessing was very cool.

>> short introduction here: My name is Olga and I work as a media artist in Eindhoven, Netherlands. I have been working on various interdisciplinairy projects in the fields of live visual performance, interactive installations, video-productions.

I also curate audiovisual arts and live cinema events. (State of the Image, Imageradio, Plaza+>>jan. 2008).

Marius Watz is an artist working with visual abstraction through generative processes. An autodidact, he dropped out of Computer Science studies to pursue visual work through programming. His work is known for its bold colors and strong geometric composition, and has been exhibited extensively in the international media art scene.

Watz is the founder of Generator.x, a blog and series of events related to generative art and design. He is currently teaching at the Oslo National Academy of the Arts and the Oslo School of Architecture and Design, lecturing on computational strategies for artists and designers.

Floris Vanhoof's films were shown at the Nam June Paik festival in Antwerp, the International Filmfestival in Rotterdam, the Insight festival in Hasselt and numerous smaller filmnights. He plays electronic instruments in the improvisation collective R.O.T., whose recordings are distributed by K3AAK and other independent labels.

Billy Roisz specializes in feedback video and video/sound interaction, exploring the links and gaps between seeing and hearing, images and sounds - using monitors, cameras, video mixingdesks, a selfbuilt videosynth, computer and turntables for video and sound generating. She is member of NTSC (/w dieb13), AVVA (/w Toshimaru Nakamura) & LÄUSE (/w eRikm & dieb13) . Roisz has released around fifteen individual music videos, most of them are distributed by sixpackfilm/vienna.

Boris Debackere teaches sound design in the film department of the Hogeschool Sint-Lukas. He studied at the Conservatory and Academy of The Hague. He is founder of Squint vzw and Gate4, organisation for ‘new media experiments’ and worked freelance for V2, Institute for Unstable Media in Rotterdam.

Boris' work includes ‘vortices’ a reactive video installation which was part of the exposition Gorge(l) at the KMSKA. He collaborated with Brecht Debackere on the live cinema performance ‘rotor’ (performed at several international media festivals).
Debackere did the composition and sound design for films from Herman Asselberghs, Marnix de Nijs and he is currently working for Chris Mergans' animation film 'Goed Nieuws' and for Noud Heerkens' feature film 'La Voix Humaine'.

Eavesdropper; Yves De Mey started out as a drum'n'bass and breakbeat producer. After playing extensively throughout Flanders and a few releases he got asked to make a score for 'Aars', a huge theatre play by Het Toneelhuis – Antwerp. One year later, he made the soundtrack for 'Scratching the Inner Fields' by Wim Vandekeybus/Ultima Vez.
Since then, Eavesdropper has been very active on different levels; sound installations, scores for dance, theatre, performance and film, sound design for film and commercials, DJ-sets, live gigs and many more.
He also runs the lo profile label Knobsounds and collaborates with Glamor Is Undead.

Jerry Galle When Jerry Galle started painting, he was influenced by the old black-and-white photography by pioneers such as Fox Talbot and Niepce. The gradual decay of these photographs but also the sensuality belonging to this, resurfaced in the way Galle played with light in his paintings. Contingencies occurring during the reproduction process and susceptibility to the progress of time, made the accurate replication of photographic images impossible. The neutral and machine-like reproduction of images was contaminated with an accidental naturalness that gave a tactile dimension to the image. This recurrence of small defects and spontaneous unevenness is more related to poetic expression than to neutral copying.
Jerry Galle’s computer-generated work precisely pursues this tension between the visual image and its possibly contingent tactile properties. []

VJ Theory is an international community actively discussing and reflecting on philosophy and theory related with Vjing and realtime interactive performance. It is a project born within iRes, the research program of the faculty of fine arts of Falmouth University College.
The web site and the associated upcoming publications bring together work by the foremost practitioners and academics in the field, either developed independently or collectively.

LAb[au] _ Laboratory for Architecture and Urbanism. Founded in 1997 and based in Brussels, LAb[au] mainly creates interactive artworks, audiovisual performances and scenographies, for which it develops its own software and interfaces. Its four members (Manuel Abendroth, Jerome Decock, Alexandre Plennevaux and Els Vermang) also run since 2003 a digital design gallery, "MediaRuimte", in the centre of Brussels.

LAb[au] has exhibited its work at Sonar (Barcelona, 2004), New Museaum (New York, 2003), Nabi Art Center (Seoul, 2003), Bauhaus (Dessau, several times), ICA (London, 2002), Louvre (Paris, 2000), Ars Elektronica (Linz, 1999), Centre Georges Pompidou (Paris, several times), NAI ( Rotterdam, 1998) among many others.

Mark Amerika has exhibited his work in many venues including the Whitney Biennial, the ICA in London, the Walker Art Center, and the Denver Art Museum. He has had four early career retrospectives including the first-ever net art retrospective in 2001 at the ACA Media Arts Plaza in Tokyo, Japan ("Avant-Pop: The Stories of Mark Amerika [an Internet art retrospective]"). Both retrospectives covered the years 1993-2001. In 2004, he had two follow-up retrospectives, one at Ciberart Bilbao in Spain, and one at the Festival International de Linguagem Eletronica at the Gallerie do SESI in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

A cult novelist, media theorist, web publisher, and VJ artist who has performed internationally, Amerika is the author of many books including his recently published collection of artist writings entitled META/DATA: A Digital Poetics (The MIT Press). He has also directed a series of feature length foreign films scheduled to be released in various formats as part of a new body of work entitled the Foreign Film Series. Amerika, who as the founder of the Alt-X Network [altx.com] is publisher of the electronic book review, is a Professor of Art and Art History at the University of Colorado at Boulder.
